Hey there, and welcome back. I’m doctor Hartung, and you’re listening to the Family Chiropractic Center podcast. Today we’re talking about something that affects so many people I see in my office every single week. Tension headaches. If you’ve ever felt that tight, squeezing pressure around your head, or that dull ache that just won’t quit, you know exactly what I mean. And the big question today is, can chiropractic care actually help with that? The short answer is yes. But let me explain why, because I think it’ll really make sense to you once you understand what’s going on.
Now, here’s the thing about tension headaches. Most people assume they’re just a brain problem, or maybe stress, and they reach for ibuprofen and call it a day. And look, I get it. When your head is pounding, you just want relief. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that tension headaches are very often connected to what’s happening in your neck and upper back. The muscles, the joints, the whole structure up there.
Let me break this down for you. When the joints in your cervical spine, that’s your neck, are not moving the way they should, the surrounding muscles start to compensate. They tighten up. They get overworked. And those tight muscles can refer pain up into your head. Around your temples, across your forehead, even behind your eyes. That’s the tension headache cycle a lot of my patients are stuck in. The neck is the source, but the head is where they feel it.
Here’s what’s interesting. A lot of people in Robinson Township come in telling me they’ve had headaches for years. And when I examine them, I find significant stiffness and restriction in the upper neck. Once we start working on that, the headaches start to improve. That’s not a coincidence.
So what does chiropractic care actually do for tension headaches? A couple of things. First, chiropractic adjustments help restore proper movement to the joints in the neck and upper spine. When those joints move better, there’s less mechanical stress on the surrounding tissues. Second, when that tension in the muscles starts to release, the trigger points, those knots that send pain radiating up into your skull, they calm down. We also spend time looking at your posture. Because forward head posture, which is incredibly common now with everyone looking down at phones and screens all day, puts a tremendous amount of extra load on the neck. Every inch your head shifts forward, the effective weight your neck has to support increases significantly. That adds up fast. And for a lot of people, that’s the root cause of their chronic tension headaches.
Now, what can you do starting today? First, be mindful of your posture. When you’re sitting at a desk or looking at your phone, try to keep your ears over your shoulders. It sounds simple, but most people have no idea how far forward their head has drifted until someone points it out. Second, take breaks. If you’re sitting for long periods, get up, move around, do a few gentle neck stretches. Roll your shoulders back. Give your spine a chance to reset. Third, stay hydrated. Dehydration is a genuine headache trigger that people overlook all the time.
Now, when should you come in and see us? If you’re getting headaches more than a couple of times a week, if over-the-counter medication is becoming a regular part of your routine, or if your headaches seem to come with neck stiffness or tension in your shoulders, those are all signs that something structural might be going on. That’s worth getting checked out. And of course, if your headaches are severe, sudden, or feel different from what you normally experience, always get that evaluated by a medical professional right away.
At Family Chiropractic Center, we take the time to actually figure out what’s driving your headaches. We look at how your spine is moving, how your posture is, where the tension is building up, and we put together a care plan that makes sense for you.
If you’re in the Robinson Township area and you’ve been dealing with tension headaches, give us a call. We would love to help. Thanks so much for tuning in today. I’m doctor Hartung, and we’ll talk again soon.
